In the heart of Egypt’s White Desert lies Wadi al-Aqabat region, which geologists say has a lot in common with the surface of the Red Planet.

Wadi Al Aqabat is located in the middle of the White Desert Reserve in Farafra Oasis, about 600 kilometers from Cairo.

Wadi Al Aqabat is one of the most important natural attractions within Western Sahara, located near the hills of the White Desert, which were formed as a result of limestone deposits and erosion factors over millions of years.

As for why the area is called obstacles, the region gained that name from unique and distinctive geographical obstacles, hills, and rocks dug by nature millions of years ago.

Geologists have described the area as a ‘natural history museum of the globe’ and likened it to the surface of Mars.

The starry night sky on the ground of Wadi al-Aqaba attracts astrophotography enthusiasts as well as astronomers, as it provides the opportunity to see the movement of stars and planets clearly during the evening.
