Rothenburg town, known fully as Rothenburg ob der Tauber, is one of few well-preserved medieval towns in Germany. It got its world fame as a symbol of German romance. Buildings, walls and streets all speak medieval that the town became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Germany’s Bavaria state.

“Rothenburg ob der Tauber” means in German the “Red fortress above the Tauber” as the town is located in on a plateau overlooking the Tauber River. The short word “Rothenburg” is said to be inspired by the German words rot (red) and burg (burgh) which is a medieval fortified settlement, referring to the red roofs of the houses that overlook the river.

The town is a popular part of the Romantic Road tourist route through southern Germany, and is located in Franconia region of Bavariaabout halfway between Frankfurt and Munich.

It is considered to be one of the oldest and most historic medieval towns along the Romantic Road. The official history of the town is thought to date back to the 10th century after the construction of a castle above the River Tauber.
